Instead I go for hikes and real bike rides, and if I can't get motivated to be active, I will tell myself that I'll go check out the vegetation and birds (nature lover here) for a half an hour and that's all. I will never go back to do cardio in a gym, I would - maybe - consider to go lift if I got more serious about Bodyweight fitness. The social pressure of being surrounded by your class and the idiotic activity of sitting on a bike without actually going anywhere. I had to do two Cardio sessions at a gym with my High School 15 years ago and I loathed it. The routine is definitely very good, and possibly better than what some clueless people might be doing at the gym when they're bumming around there! I don't care for the looks, I'm not pretty or tiny, that is why it's great to know I'm strong. After a few workouts you will notice yourself getting stronger (not bulky), no matter what your starting point is. The Recommended Routine at r/bodyweightfitness is a very good work out that will totally make you sweat and feel tired if that's what you're after. If I don't work out all week - well, it would be nice if I had done for my fitness / stamina / strength / all those goodies, but I can still lose weight as long as I stick to my calorie goals. I do also try to separate diet & exercise in my head though, for weight loss and fitness respectively. I'm also looking to add in some exercises with my resistance bands which my parents bought me a couple of years back - there are loads of great youtube series of different exercises with or without equipment. I think you've got to find something which is at least tolerable, preferably enjoyable. I can't say whether these are as effective as the gym, I guess that would depend on how you do your exercise and if you stick with it - people could half-ass it at the gym or people could half-ass it at home, or people could rock it in either situation. It might be the competetive atmosphere helps you not feel so shy or self conscious and really throw yourself into it! Something else I've seen suggested for people who don't enjoy the gym is getting involved in a sport. I like to go for a walk sometimes too, load up pokemon go and walk for as long as I want (I'm not a runner as I like things which don't jolt my knee but being outside is nice!). I also have a wii fit, I have a routine I do (nearly) every morning (from the yoga & muscle categories) & then sometimes do some other things if I feel like it. I have a cheap exercise bike I picked up so I can do that at home while I watch netflix. That's not to crap on people who find enjoyment and fulfillment and all sorts of good feelings at the gym, but every time I go in positive or neutral I come out wishing I'd never gone in the first place. I can't think of anything about it I like. It makes me anxious and uncomfortable and feel like crap, and it really is just a terrible experience every time. I've tried to get into it enough times now to know that I hate it so much it's a very quick way for me to throw in the towel.
